Following its return in 2015, 25 years after the inaugural event, the Nintendo World Championships is back again for 2017. Nintendo have announced that this year’s tournament will be held in the Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom, New York on October 7, with regional heats taking place across the US starting August 19 (“not really the World Championships is it then?” — me, a bitter Englishman).
The heats are taking place at select Best Buy stores in the following locations:
- August 19 and 20 – New York/San Francisco Bay Area
- August 26 and 27 – Chicago/Los Angeles
- September 2 and 3 – Minneapolis/Dallas
- September 9 and 10 – Seattle/Miami
Each heat features two age brackets; ages 12 and under, and 13 and above. Players will compete in Mario Kart 7, with two cracks at setting the best time on the allotted circuit. The younger age group will be tackling DS Luigi’s Mansion, using Mario, the Standard Kart, Standard Wheels and the Super Glider. The older bracket meanwhile will be taking Bowser for a spin around GBA Bowser Castle 1 using the same kart set-up.
Attendees will also gain 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points when they scan in, and will be able to go hands on with demos for Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns whilst they’re there.
