Kimishima: There will be a wide array of accessories for the Switch

Anyone who owned a Wii knows that if there’s one thing Nintendo loves, it’s accessories. I have one drawer in my house which is home to a veritable orgy of white plastic tennis rackets, zappers, steering wheels, classic controllers, and lord knows what else. And whilst we’ll have to wait until January to get some more concrete info about Nintendo’s next console, there have been a few drips and drabs of information from Nintendo in the wake of last week’s trailer.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima indicated that the hardware we saw in the reveal trailer, JoyCons, Pro Controllers etc, are by no means representative of the whole ecosystem. “By no means was that everything. [On the ecosystem] It may be appropriate to call them accessories. Or it might be better to call them add-on hardware. It’s probably more correct to call them accessories. You can assume that there will be a wider array” he said.

Elsewhere in the interview Kimishima said he was ‘surprised’ that Nintendo’s stock value dropped in the wake of the reveal, and also hinted at the possibility of developing for VR in the future.

The removable nature of the JoyCon controllers offer up a wide array of possibilities for controller set-ups. Not to mention the customisation we could see (SNES coloured buttons anyone?) but we’ll have to wait and see what awesome additions and/or cheap tat Nintendo will be flogging us to supplement our core Switch experience.
