Wall Street Journal fans the “NX uses cartridges” flames

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has added its voice to the numerous outlets suggesting that the upcoming Nintendo NX will mark a return to cartridge-based storage media in lieu of discs.

The publication cites sources “familiar with the matter” in explaining that Nintendo is showing a “renewed focus” on the technology, in light of developments in the sector. Advances mean that high capacity flash memory can be created at lower costs whilst still offering significant storage space.

The WSJ also claims that cartridges or game cards are more kid-friendly, and thus more desirable given Nintendo’s traditional targeting of younger audiences. They go on to quote former Sony employee Atsushi Osanai as saying that these high capacity flash cards are “no doubt today’s best format to physically distribute games”.

We’ll have to wait and see whether or not this — and every other rumour about the NX — comes to fruition. There’s still no word on when the official unveiling will take place. Some are guessing it will show at the Tokyo Game Show later this week, but it should be stressed that this is entirely speculation. Regardless, with the system still slated for a March 2017 launch, Nintendo is running out of time to tell us what it is we’re all so excited for!
